Bohol to Cebu Ferry: Return Crossing Guide
TL;DR
Ferries depart Tagbilaran port (Bohol) multiple times daily to Cebu City. Journey takes about 2 hours. Tickets start around ₱850. Plan 30–40 minutes for transfer from Panglao hotels to the port. To reach Mactan airport from Cebu, add 45 minutes to your booking window. Book your return ticket when you book your outbound — peak season returns fill fast.
Getting to Tagbilaran Port from Panglao
Most visitors stay in Panglao (Alona Beach or Hennessy's area). The port at Tagbilaran is the only commercial ferry terminal in Bohol, and it's about 30–40 minutes by van from your hotel depending on traffic and which beach resort you're based at.
When you book a return transfer with us, a van picks you up from your Panglao hotel, drives you directly to Tagbilaran port, and drops you at the gate. Arrive at the terminal at least 60 minutes before your scheduled departure, especially in peak season.
If you're self-arranging: tricycles and van rentals are easy to find in Panglao. Expect to pay ₱500–800 for a one-way transfer. Ask your hotel to call one in advance rather than hailing on the street.
Which Ferry Operator Should You Book?
Three operators run the Tagbilaran–Cebu crossing (the return route). Here's the honest breakdown:
| Operator | Duration | Frequency | Price | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OceanJet | ~2 hrs | 6–8 daily | ₱800 | Most reliable, most departures |
| SuperCat | ~2 hrs | 3–4 daily | ₱750 | Slightly cheaper, good alternative |
| Lite Ferries | ~3.5 hrs | 2–3 daily | ₱450 | Budget option, slower but comfortable |
Our recommendation: OceanJet for most travellers. Highest frequency means if you miss one, another follows within the hour. SuperCat is a solid backup. Lite Ferries only if you're on a tight budget and don't mind the extra time.
The Return Booking Trick: Book Both Ways at Once
This is the insider tip that saves hassle: Book your return ferry ticket at the same time as your outbound. In peak season (December–May), return sailings from Bohol to Cebu sell out just as fast as the inbound, sometimes faster because many travellers leave booking their return to the last moment. A Tuesday morning sailing from Bohol back to Cebu can be completely full by the previous Friday.
When you book both ferries together with us, you get one confirmation email, consistent operator choice, and no last-minute stress if your chosen time slot fills up.
Connecting to Mactan Airport (Cebu)
If you're flying out of Mactan International Airport (Cebu's main airport), add 45 minutes to 1 hour from your ferry arrival time. The port is about 45 minutes from the airport depending on traffic, toll roads, and baggage claim time.
We recommend booking a ferry that arrives at least 3.5 hours before your flight. If your flight is at 15:00 (3 PM), aim for a ferry that lands in Cebu by 11:00 AM at the latest.
A transfer from Tagbilaran port to Mactan airport takes roughly 1 hour 30 minutes via Cebu City (depending on congestion). Some visitors opt to break it up: ferry to Cebu port, lunch and rest, then a separate transfer to the airport.
What "With Transfer" Actually Means
When you book through us with a return transfer included, a driver picks you up from your Panglao hotel, takes you to Tagbilaran port, and drops you at the terminal entrance. At the Cebu end, a separate driver meets you at the port exit and takes you to your next destination (hotel, airport, or anywhere else in Cebu City).
The transfer is private, not shared — one vehicle, one booking confirmation, no surprises.
Weather Cancellations and Refunds
Ferry cancellations due to typhoons or heavy swells are rare in peak season but more common June–November. When a sailing is cancelled, you get a full refund automatically. You can either rebook on the next available ferry or cancel your booking entirely.
If you're cutting it close for an airport departure and cancellation happens, your transfer driver can recommend alternatives (some visitors catch flights from Bohol's smaller airport to Cebu instead, though it's more expensive).

Can I bring a motorbike or scooter on the return ferry?
No. Fast ferries (OceanJet, SuperCat) are passenger-only. If you've rented a motorbike in Panglao, arrange to return it before heading to the port or contact a shipping company that handles vehicle RORO transport.
What if I miss my ferry departure?
If you book through us with a transfer, your driver monitors your ferry time and builds in buffer. If you're delayed, tell your driver immediately — they can sometimes radio the ferry company if you're very close. Otherwise, you can rebook on the next sailing (subject to availability) or get a refund if you cancel in time.
Is there food and water on the ferry?
OceanJet and SuperCat have small snack bars with drinks and snacks. Prices are marked up — bring your own water and a few snacks. The journey is smooth enough that most passengers don't get queasy, but take seasickness medication if you're prone to motion.
What's the difference between arriving at Cebu port vs. Mactan pier?
All fast ferries dock at Cebu City port (Pier 1 area), not at Mactan. From Cebu City port to Mactan airport is about 45 minutes by car. There is no direct ferry to Mactan Island.
Can I book a one-way ferry without the return transfer?
Yes. If you're arranging your own ground transport, you can book just the ferry ticket. We simply recommend the transfer option because the Panglao-to-port logistics can be stressful if you don't know the area.
